Maurice Muendo Musyoki and Film Plug
Maurice Muendo Musyoki is a Kenyan filmmaker, sound designer and director, and a co-founder of the production company Film Plug. He grew up in Eastleigh, Nairobi, an upbringing he says drew him to stories of resilience and ambition. His route into film was far from conventional: he enrolled in a finance programme at Zetech College in 2018, quietly walked away from it to pursue his passion, and went on to earn a scholarship to the MultiChoice Talent Factory.
Muendo built his early career in sound, handling location recording and sound design on DStv productions such as Wawu, That's My Dress and Mum vs Wife, and on the award-nominated film Last Supper. Through Film Plug, which sets out to produce quality African stories and mentor young filmmakers, he worked on Green House, commissioned by Maisha Magic Movies, while also directing short films including Rebirth and The Date.
His feature debut, BOBO, was selected from 296 submissions to an open call by Showmax and the Joburg Film Festival for first-time directors from Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa. Written by fellow MTF alumnus Bruno Tanya and produced by Muendo under African Dopler Limited, the film follows a gifted young woman in Mathare who misses out on a bursary just as her family risks losing its land to a moneylender. Muendo worked closely with Mathare residents so the neighbourhood would feel like a character rather than a backdrop. BOBO premiered at the 2025 Joburg Film Festival and began streaming on Showmax on 23 May 2025.
